Getting to Karawari


Left photo -It is not possile to drive to Karawari,as there are no contnecting roads, It is about 300km to the coast down the river. It truely is an isolated area. To get to Karawari, you must fly in a chartered aircraft. The photo is of a small tributary flowing into the Karawari River
Right photo- Once arriving at the remote airstrip it is an enjoyable 15 min ride in a jet boat up the river to the lodge. Boats are the main form of transport in this area. We operate three of these boats
Arriving at Karawari Lodge


Left photo -A view of the lodge from the river.
Right photo- A quick 2 min 4wd ride up the hill wil have you arrive at the lodge. These are the only cars for hundreds of Kilometers. One thing you will not see is a traffic Jam!

Right photo- the inside of the a typical room.Mosquitos are usually not a problem, but better safe than sorry. Each of the beds is fitted with mosquito nets

Cultural Touring
Now it is time to Explore... everybody back in the boat
This is Mangami village, just a few miniutes jet boat down the river


Left photo -You will be welcomed to come and visit the village and see how these people live. Note the woman is holding a carved mask, she is trying to sell
Right photo- This is the same woman going about her daily choirs, in this case, preparing Sago. This is one of the staple foods of the area.


Dont be surprised what you find in the village. No! its not a chicken! This is a pet cassawari





Left photo- This is the cook coming to work at the lodge, accross the river
Right photo- Want to have a go in a canoe? Standing up is Extremely difficiult to do. Sitting down is much safer. This activity is only for the most adventurous.


Left photo- Carving a stool. The Sepik people are world class wood carvers and often sell some of thier carvings for cash. You will find some unique and unusual carvings without looking to far.
Enviroment Touring


Left photo -Birding is done generally early in the morning and usually done from the jetboat. For more serious birders we can arrange full day tours
Right photo- as small sample of birdlife along the banks of the Karawari river
